This song is what I call the “odd number” of the project. It does not follow the style and sound of the other 9 tunes, and its composers were seldom associated with the primary Bossa Nova movement. “Pra dizer Adeus” (To say goodbye), is a Brazilian classic by Edu Lobo and Torquato Neto, which embodies the inevitable closure of what is no longer, the inescapable goodbye of an end, be it love, or life: “Goodbye, I'm leaving never to return, and wherever I go, I know I'm going alone. So alone, my love, that it’s not even good to think, as I'm never coming back from the path that I’m taking…”
The lyricist, Torquato Neto, was a poet, journalist, actor and filmmaker, an important name who stood out in Brazilian culture by his irreverence and rebellious nature and one of the founders of the “Tropicália” movement which followed the Bossa Nova. He took his own life shortly after writing the lyrics to this song, at the age of 28.
Edu Lobo, the composer, was of a very different nature and opened the way for the second generation of Bossa Nova in the early sixties. Tom Jobim considered Edu Lobo to be one of his music children and wrote this beautiful note in Edu’s Songbook: “Edu Lobo, you are a wonderful composer. An amazing thing! I can still remember when your dad, Fernando, told me: “There’s a kid at the house who plays a mean guitar…” And then I met you. Skinny, the thin growth of facial hair becoming a moustache, the innocent face, the young mouth, shy, guitar in hand, stretching out, growing quickly to become the great composer, guitarist, pianist, singer, poet, lyricist, arranger, orchestrator and conductor, Eduardo de Goes Lobo.”
Jobim loved “Pra Dizer Adeus” and recorded it with Edu Lobo in 1981 in their album “Edu & Tom, Tom & Edu”.
